This MSc recognises that conservation challenges are influenced by ecological, economic, social, and political factors, and that addressing them effectively requires interdisciplinary thinking. Drawing on both natural and social sciences, the programme equips you to understand and tackle conservation issues from multiple perspectives. You will build expertise in evidence-based conservation and environmental analysis while developing a deeper appreciation of the human dimensions of environmental change and biodiversity governance.
Residential field classes provide first-hand experience of conservation planning and practice, helping you connect theory with real-world application. Through a combination of research-led teaching, practical training and independent study, you will develop the analytical, practical, interdisciplinary, collaborative and communication skills needed to contribute across research, policy and professional practice.
The Conservation MSc welcomes applicants from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, including ecology, geography, environmental sciences, biology, anthropology and related social sciences.

The Conservation MSc is designed to support both academic and professional career pathways, equipping you with the knowledge and skills needed to address global conservation challenges.
Throughout the course, you will develop transferable and professional skills valued across the conservation and environmental sectors, including:

Working across disciplines and integrating different forms of knowledge.
Analysing ecological, environmental and social datasets.
Applying systems-based approaches to conservation challenges.

Graduates pursue careers across research, policy and practice in the UK and internationally. Alumni have secured roles in the public, private and non-profit sectors, including charities, NGOs, consultancies, government agencies and research institutions, contributing to biodiversity conservation, sustainability and nature recovery.

The course also provides a strong foundation for doctoral research, with many graduates progressing to PhD study and academic careers. Alumni have gone on to hold senior leadership positions across the conservation sector, including Chair of Natural England and Chief Executive of The Wildlife Trusts.
