A minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard.
Nanotechnology is transforming the way we design materials, devices and systems at the nanoscale, with applications reaching across semiconductors, healthcare, biotechnology, energy and quantum technologies. This MSc is designed for graduates of the physical sciences and engineering who want to develop specialist expertise in this rapidly evolving field.
The course provides a comprehensive grounding in the technological and scientific foundations of nanotechnology, covering nanostructure fabrication, nanoelectronic and nanophotonic technologies, quantum physics and device physics, molecular biophysics, and applications in the life sciences and healthcare. You will develop both theoretical modelling skills and advanced practical laboratory techniques, including planning and building devices, analysis and characterisation.
Recognising that nanotechnology raises distinct ethical and social questions, the course includes a dedicated module on integrating these considerations into research and development from the outset. This gives you a broader perspective on how the technologies you work with are developed and applied in the world.
This MSc develops the technical breadth and practical capability needed to work in nanotechnology across a range of disciplines and industries. You will graduate with in-depth knowledge of nanostructure fabrication, nanoelectronic and nanophotonic technologies, quantum information, molecular biophysics, and life sciences applications, alongside advanced laboratory skills in device design, fabrication and characterisation.
The interdisciplinary nature of the course also develops broader skills that are highly valued by employers: the ability to work across scientific boundaries, to approach complex problems analytically, and to communicate technical findings clearly. The ethical dimension woven into the curriculum equips you to think critically about the societal implications of the technologies you work with.
Industry engagement occurs throughout the course, including guest lectures and seminars from professionals in the sector.
Graduates of this MSc go on to careers across a wide range of industries, including microelectronics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials science and consulting, as well as into doctoral study. The versatility of the skill set developed on the course means graduates are well placed for roles in both technical and non-technical positions across the sector.
