The Health Humanities MA enables you to explore health, illness and care from both historical and contemporary perspectives through an interdisciplinary lens. Drawing on fields including anthropology, history, philosophy, sociology, science and technology studies, global health, literature and film studies, the course equips you to engage critically with some of the most pressing debates in health and society today.
You will develop a broad understanding of the historical contexts, key constraints, ethical questions and social factors that shape experiences of health and illness, while gaining the skills to work across disciplinary boundaries. Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to engage with researchers working on health-related topics across the humanities, social sciences and health fields.
The core modules of the course provide a strong graduate foundation, developing the research, analytical and academic writing skills needed for advanced study and independent research. The wide range of optional modules available enables you to tailor the course to your interests.

The course will enable students to:
Gain knowledge and understanding of the field of health humanities.
Communicate complex ideas effectively, orally and in writing.
Develop analytical skills to use subject-specific theories and approaches, evaluate their validity and reach coherent and original conclusions.
Develop theoretical skills relating to critical thinking, integrating new concepts and ideas into existing knowledge.
Understand how to approach a literary, theoretical or qualitative research project in the health humanities.
Our graduates are highly valued by employers for their interdisciplinary skills and linguistic and cultural knowledge. There are many additional activities available within the UCL Health Humanities Centre, along with the wider community including UCL Careers , to help students develop skills.
This MA provides an exceptional foundation for those hoping to undertake PhD research and pursue an academic career, ranging from interdisciplinary work in the health humanities to a broad spectrum of more specialised disciplines, such as medicine, the philosophy of medicine, history of medicine, medical sociology or medical anthropology, among others.
The course also aims to provide suitable preparation for a range of careers including science and medical journalism, bioethics, healthcare policy, consultancy, education, NGOs and museum and heritage.
