What makes a state legitimate? How can we argue for equality, and of what kind? How do historical forms of thinking and political institutions shape our most pressing contemporary political concerns?
The MSc Political Theory gives you the tools and time to think deeply about these and many other questions at the heart of political life, and to defend your own position, in writing and in debate.
Led by globally renowned scholars of political theory and philosophy (we're ranked fifth in the world for the study of politics in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 ), the programme combines analytical, critical and historical approaches. You'll construct and scrutinise arguments about justice, legitimacy and power; engage with perspectives that challenge the field's own assumptions, including postcolonial and comparative political theory, feminist critiques, and critical analyses of domination and structural injustice; and read some of the past thinkers who shaped these debates in the first place.
Throughout the programme, you'll apply this thinking to contemporary problems such as democratic backsliding, climate change and global inequality, with opportunities to tailor aspects of your studies to your interests.
By graduation, you’ll have had the opportunity to develop the skills needed to construct and defend rigorous arguments about the political questions that matter most.
