Explore the technological, numerical and theoretical aspects of astronomy. You will master the development and application of research methods to collect, analyse and interpret observations in the field of astrophysics, leading to advanced international and multidisciplinary research in a rapidly evolving field. KU Leuven situates itself as a leader in astronomical research in Flanders by, among other things, being the only Flemish university to off a full Master’s degree in astronomy. The master programme has a strong international character, attracting students from many different countries and maintaining an extensive network of national international collaborations. Throughout the master programme, students are embedded in the research groups at the Institute of Astronomy and KU Leuven, and can participate in the leading research conducted at the Institute. Our researchers have access to large-scale modern instruments within the framework of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), and the European Space Agency (ESA). Moreover, thanks to KU Leuven, Flanders has its own professional telescope, Mercator, at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, which master students have the opportunity to use during one of their courses. Large scale numerical models in the context of projects or the master's thesis can be simulated on the KU Leuven Genius supercomputer with more than 8000 cores.
