How do people worldwide give meaning to their lives, work and relationships? What are their motives, opportunities and choices? You will analyse social and cultural processes and discover how inequality, migration, climate change or technology affect people. Graduates work associal anthropologists in NGOs, development, human rights or intercultural policy agencies. What is the impact of global warming on communities? How do refugees reconstruct new homes? How does technology in Africa reconfigure family ties? How do rising sea-levels impact communities in Oceania? How do war refugees make a home in populist Europe? The Master of Social and Cultural Anthropology at KU Leuven engages with these and many other issues in order to understand social and cultural life in a continuously changing world. As a student of anthropology you engage with key issues such as the legacies of colonisation, the making and unmaking of identity and political subjectivity, more than human relations, from everyday experience of actors involved. The programme offers a thorough foundation on the discpline’s historical developments, main theories, and concepts. This is combined with a hands-on approach to ethnographic research in a region of choice. The programme is firmly embedded in the cutting-edge research of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at KU Leuven.
