The master’s programme in Civil and Architectural Engineering prepares graduates to design and build sustainable homes and infrastructure, addressing global challenges such as urbanisation, climate change, and the transition to climate-resilient societies. This programme gives you advanced knowledge in the field of Structural Engineering as well as in Civil or Architectural Engineering subjects. At KTH, the programme emphasises a systems perspective on buildings and infrastructure, where students learn to integrate technical performance, sustainability and lifecycle considerations into the design and planning process. The programme offers advanced-level courses that often involve real-life projects and the use of state-of-the-art design and modelling tools.
The programme offers courses in both Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. The courses in Civil Engineering are devoted to techniques for designing, constructing and maintaining roads, streets, railway tracks, bridges and tunnels. The courses in Architectural Engineering focus on engineering design and analysis of buildings with an emphasis on system-level performance from a lifecycle perspective. The teaching methods comprise a mix of lectures, exercises, projects and laboratory work. Located in Stockholm, the programme benefits from close connections to ongoing urban development and infrastructure projects, as well as collaboration with companies and public-sector organisations active in the Swedish construction and transport sector.
The programme concludes with a degree project that addresses a specific issue in the field, emphasising investigation and analysis of a problem. The project is an opportunity for you to interact with both industry and current research.
Graduates from the programme will have gained:
This is a two-year programme, 120 ECTS credits, in English. Graduates will be awarded a Master of Science degree. The programme is given at the KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Architecture and Built Environment (at KTH).
Programme structure and progression
During the first year, students develop advanced knowledge in structural engineering, construction materials, building technologies and infrastructure systems. The studies then progress towards more specialised and applied areas such as bridge design, hydraulic engineering, smart buildings, geotechnical engineering and advanced structural analysis.
In the second year, students deepen their expertise through advanced courses, industry-related projects and a degree project connected to current research or professional practice within the built environment.
Courses in the programme
The programme courses cover topics such as the design and construction of roads, streets, railway tracks, bridges, and tunnels, foundation engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, structural engineering, concrete structures, steel and timber structures, building materials, indoor climate and energy, and environmental aspects of the built environment.
