Modern society depends on the efficient exchange, processing and interpretation of information. Communication networks connect people, devices and services across the globe, while advances in signal processing, machine learning and information engineering enable new applications spanning telecommunications and autonomous systems to artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
The master's programme in Information and Communication Engineering provides advanced knowledge of how information is represented, transmitted, processed and analysed. The programme combines foundations in communication engineering, information processing, and networked systems with opportunities to specialise in areas shaping the future of digital society. You will learn advanced methods for developing future communication systems, information-processing technologies and AI-driven applications.
This is a new master's programme starting in August 2027. Building on KTH's long-standing strengths in communication systems, information processing and network engineering, it brings together areas previously covered by several master's programmes.
You choose one of three tracks:
Information Engineering • Communication Systems • Networked Systems
The Information Engineering track focuses on signal processing, machine learning and information extraction from data. You will study both data-driven and model-based methods for analysing, interpreting and transforming information from sources such as images, video, audio and sensor data, with applications in visual data analysis and intelligent systems.
The Communication Systems track focuses on the technologies that enable modern communication networks. You will study digital and wireless communication systems, mobile and satellite communications, information theory and advanced communication technologies that support future connectivity.
The Networked Systems track focuses on the design, operation and security of large-scale communication networks. You will study distributed systems, cloud and edge computing, intelligent network control, wireless networking and emerging technologies such as non-terrestrial networks and LEO satellite constellations that support modern digital services. The track is shared with the master's programme in Scalable Computing Systems, combining perspectives on communication networks, distributed systems and digital infrastructure.
Throughout the programme, you will work with methods and technologies that form the foundation of today's information society, while developing the ability to analyse complex technical systems and address challenges related to scalability, reliability, security and sustainability.
The programme is closely connected to KTH's internationally recognised research in information and communication technologies. Students benefit from an active research environment spanning communication systems, signal processing, machine learning, wireless networks, distributed systems and digital infrastructure. Research and education are connected to initiatives such as Digital Futures, SweWIN and SMART 6GSAT, which address challenges related to digital transformation, next-generation wireless systems and future communication technologies. Located in one of Europe's leading hubs for telecommunications and data-driven technologies, the programme also benefits from KTH's long-standing industry collaborations, providing valuable insight into current technological developments and future challenges.
This is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science. The programme is offered at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (at KTH).
