The master's programme in Nanotechnology focuses on semiconductor chip-based components and systems with applications in electronics, photonics and microsystems technologyBased on fundamental semiconductor physics, the programme provides a solid understanding of semiconductor components, their manufacture and their integration into advanced chip-based systems. In addition, great importance is placed on the understanding and handling of advanced analysis methods for both material and component properties.
You gain hands-on experience with advanced materials analysis, semiconductor fabrication and device characterisation using the research infrastructure available at KTH. Through laboratory work and project-based courses, you follow the development process from materials and manufacturing technologies to semiconductor devices and integrated systems. The programme is closely linked to the extensive research activities at the KTH Electrum laboratory , a world-leading resource for the education, research and product development related to micro and nanofabrication. It is also closely connected to the Albanova Nanolab , a physics research centre jointly operated by KTH and Stockholm University.
The degree project allows you to carry out an in-depth study within their specialisation and demonstrate the skills acquired during their studies. It can be carried out at an academic or industrial institution, needs to be relevant to the main field of study for the master's degree, and is scheduled for the last semester of the programme.
This is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science. The programme is given mainly at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (at KTH).
Programme structure and progression
During the first year, you build a foundation in semiconductor-based nanotechnology through mandatory courses in materials analysis, nanofabrication, semiconductor devices and photonics. Depending on your previous studies and range of interests, you will be provided the opportunity to strengthen you background and profile yourself through primer and elective related to solid-state physics, electronics and a range semiconductor-based technologies.
During the second year, you take mandatory courses in power semiconductor devices and research methodology. You then deepen your expertise through elective courses in areas such as integrated circuits, microsystems technology, photonics, quantum photonics, semiconductor device simulation and radar systems. The programme concludes with a degree project carried out during the final semester at an academic or industrial institution in Sweden or abroad, allowing you to specialise further within your chosen area of nanotechnology.
Courses in the programme
The courses in the programme cover topics such as semiconductor physics, materials analysis methods, semiconductor devices, photonic materials and devices, integrated circuit design and manufacturing, scientific methodology and societal implications.

Meet students from the programme
"I appreciate the strong connection between theory and practice - in nanofabrication and characterisation courses, we visit labs, work in cleanroom environments, and gain hands-on experience with advanced instruments."
