The master’s program ‘German as a Foreign Language: Cultural Studies’ focuses both on the linguistic level of language teaching and on topics and methods of teaching literature and culture of German-speaking countries. A maximum of 25 students are admitted per year. An important part of the study program is the third term spent abroad at a partner university where students participate in seminars and develop, engage in, and reflect on their own teaching.
For admittance to the master’s program applicants need to prove the following admission requirements: • Bachelor’s degree with at least 20 credit points in German literatures as well as in linguistics. • The DSH - or German Language University Entrance Exam for Foreign Students - is mandatory for all applicants whose first language is not German and who have achieved their initial degree at a university (or equivalent institution) where the language of instruction is not German.
Prospective students who earned their degree outside of Germany and wish to apply for the first or a higher semester of a master’s program must generally apply for a VPD (preliminary examination documentation) through uni-assist and then use this document to apply via the FU Berlin application portal within the application deadlines. Please apply for the VPD as early as possible. Processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, but may take up to 8 weeks during peak periods.
