For 2027/28 entry, this course requires English language Band 3 which is equivalent to IELTS Academic 7.0 with 6.5 in each component. See our English language requirements page for the accepted tests and qualifications, required results and exemptions. You can apply online and will be expected to submit the following: A personal statement of around 500 words on your academic and relevant professional experience to date and how it informs your intention to undertake this course. In addition, you may wish to outline your vision for how the degree will feed into your research or professional career. You will need to make sure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic.
A copy of your degree transcript. We require an original transcript or a copy certified by your institution. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. You will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available. You will not be able to register as a City student without having supplied your degree transcript.
Your valid passport photocopy.
Please note: Academic references are not required when you submit your application. However, the admissions tutor may request them at a later date to help make a decision on your application.

Learn about the exciting and fast-moving publishing industry with the Publishing MA from City. From research-led assignments to digital content development, we will give you an extensive range of modern skills and knowledge required to succeed in this fascinating and constantly changing global industry. London is the global heart of the publishing industry, and this MA makes the most of its London location to bring you a commercially and professionally applied programme. You will learn directly from past and present industry professionals how publishing is continuing to evolve alongside the digital revolution. Our programme gives you an applied understanding of how physical and digital texts are conceived, developed and marketed. This MA looks at the different sectors of the publishing industry, including commercial fiction and non-fiction publishing, children's publishing, education and academic publishing. Your learning will be directly influenced by your own publishing interests, allowing you to write assignments focused on a topic and sector of the industry of your choice. The MA looks at the big challenges facing the industry, from diversity to sustainability, and, crucially, helps students to build their creativity and innovation skills, to better equip them for the world of work. Together with research-led and industry-led analytical assignments, you will develop key publishing skills in print and digital publishing that are core to most entry-level jobs in publishing.

Modules:
Some modules may be subject to change depending on student numbers, tutor availability, or course updates. This may affect the overall number of modules.
You will learn through lectures, project work, student-led projects and presentations, workshops, online learning and research, preparation of submitted work, site visits and discussions. Your final module is a substantial Major Project, which can include an approved industry or digital project.
Visiting lecturers from the industry contribute to the programme throughout the teaching year, and in many cases directly support your project work.
A standard module consists of 20 timetabled hours in a combination of lectures, groupwork sessions and supervised project work. Each module also requires substantial study hours towards both individual and group assessments.
